Well how do you do the Life and Death problems? Do you just try a few variations, then give up and look at the solution? Or find one solution, to find that the solution is completely different? If you have a board, I suggest you set up the position on the board and try through as many variations as you can think of. Studying this way, one problem could take well over 15 minutes depending on the difficulty. You shouldnt look at the solution. The point of the LD is to make you think. If you just look at the solution after trying it, then what did u really gain from it? just a shortcut ? I think that if you spend the time to solve it, you will gain more out of it. If you dont think u did it right. have someone else stronger look at it or make sure that there is absolutely no other way. Also thinking for both sides which is the best move is very helpful. Hope this made since ~_~... ![]() |

If the problem is too hard, it is good to look at the solution. Like Odnihs, I am willing to spend a fair amount of time trying - up to 10 minutes or so. Sometimes I will put it down and come back to it hours later, and then I find the solution. Problems at your level should take a couple of minutes at least. If you cant find it after a concerted effort, do easier problems instead. You will get better by doing lots of problems at the right level. Banging your head on ones you can't figure out won't help you. You can get tons of problems for any level, free, here: http://goproblems... To upload, click on the Blue Reply arrow at the bottom of a post. This is different from the Quick Reply field at the bottom of the page. Once you have composed a message, look below for the Attachment field, and select Choose file. Note that only certain types of files can be uploaded, .sgf is one of them. That first problem was ridiculous, way too complicated for DDK players. Problems that only require 3-5 steps are a lot better. Even at the dan level, most problem books don't require that convoluted an answer. I recommend looking on GoProblems.com instead. I also like Lee Chang Ho's life and death problems, available from Yellow Mountain. They start easy and get harder with each volume. By the sixth one, they are pro level problems. Graded Go Problems for beginners are good too, from Kiseido. "Go is to Western chess what philosophy is to double entry accounting." -Trevanian Paul Barchilon, American Go Foundation |

`,` !!! agreed it is too complicated for DDK s it isnt meant for them. I found the problem on goproblems once and it was ranked at 3d. Then again some people dont like and dont really trust goproblems. Some of them are really tough but they are really fun nontheless...atleast to me... ![]() |

I went 4-4 in the self-paired tournament at the Congress this year, and I came away with The Optimist trophy. XD
